Misriyati’s journey began with a profound moment of reflection inspired by a car sticker that gained prominence in Cairo. The sticker, depicting a fish being consumed by a shark, symbolized the power dynamics and social tensions between various groups in Egypt. This imagery sparked intense discussions among young social activists, revealing the increasing intolerance in society manifested in religious tensions, social segregation, and communication barriers.
In 2004, we launched our first series of workshops in Mokattam, a marginalized area known for high crime rates and domestic violence. Using interactive activities like games, songs, and dance, we created safe, human-centered learning spaces where children could explore their identities and learn peaceful ways to communicate and express themselves.
As Misriyati grew in size, diversity, and capacity, we expanded our focus to include educators, refugees, young people, social workers, and corporate clients. Our experience led to the development of several curricula tailored to various audiences, addressing different aspects of peaceful living. These curricula have become widely used and are considered key references in peace education across Egypt.
Today, graduates of our Training of Trainers (TOT) programs are prominent peace educators and practitioners, spreading the values of peace both within Egypt and internationally. Misriyati continues to evolve, driven by our commitment to fostering understanding, inclusivity, and nonviolence.
Misriyati, over its 18 years of operation, has made a substantial impact through its diverse range of programs and initiatives. Our ability to build trust and create safe spaces, combined with a values-oriented approach, has allowed us to address critical issues in Egyptian society that are often overlooked by other organizations. These issues include conflict transformation in the workplace, mediation, gender equality, peace building, non-violent communication, community conflict resolution, social dialogue facilitation, and diversity management.
